Description

This hognose snake displays the reduced Anaconda pattern, characterised by merged dorsal blotches, diminished side markings and a dark belly. Genetically, this hognose snake is heterozygous for Toffeebelly and carries one recessive Toffeebelly gene. In homozygous form, Toffeebelly produces a warm golden to light brown base colour with a distinct toffee-coloured belly and tones that may range from greenish hues to red, orange or yellow. As a heterozygous animal these colours are not expressed visually, but when paired with another Toffeebelly carrier or visual Toffeebelly, offspring can express the morph in full.

Care at a glance

A good start begins with proper housing. Juvenile western hognose snakes do best in a smaller, well-structured enclosure with a stable temperature of around 25–29 °C. For adult animals, an enclosure with a minimum floor space of 60 × 30 cm or 60 × 50 cm is suitable, with a clear enclosure gradient of approximately 24–31 °C.

Keep the environment mostly dry, with a humidity level of around 30–50%. In addition, provide a localized humid microclimate, for example in the form of a humid hide.

A juvenile western hognose snake is typically fed once every 5-7 days with an appropriately sized frozen-thawed mouse.

For detailed information on housing, temperature, humidity, and feeding, please refer to our care guide on the care page.
