The Black Ice is a unique variation of the Western Hognose Snake (Heterodon nasicus). Thanks to its distinctive appearance and active character, this species has remained one of the most popular snakes in the hobby. Description
Black Ice is a combination of the recessive Sable mutation and the heterozygous incomplete dominant Arctic mutation. This combination is recognised for its brown Sable colouration with darker borders around the pattern and the visible eyebrows associated with Arctic. Younger animals often display lighter tones with reddish and greenish hues. As the animal ages, melanin concentration increases and the overall colouration becomes darker. The pattern gradually develops into dark brown to black tones over time. Due to the influence of the Arctic mutation, contrast between the background colour and pattern generally remains clearly visible throughout the overall appearance.
